Purpose. This policy sets the environmental obligations of the business under its environment protection licence, the Environment Protection Act 2017 (Victoria) and its dam and water obligations.

1.Purpose

Generation produces emissions to air, uses and discharges water, stores fuel and chemicals and changes flows in the hydro catchment. This policy commits the business to meeting every licence condition and to reducing its environmental impact each year.

2.Policy statement

Powergen will monitor emissions, water quality and noise to the licence, will report results to the regulator on time, will manage chemicals and waste to the procedures and will maintain the environmental management system. Licence limits are legal limits, not operating targets, and any exceedance must be reported on the day.

3.Responsibilities

Managers must build environmental controls into operating and maintenance procedures. Operators must monitor the emissions and water systems each shift. Every worker must report spills, unusual discharges, dust, noise complaints and wildlife incidents.

4.Key controls

The business will operate the flue gas mitigation systems and water treatment plant to specification, will bund every chemical and fuel store, will manage dewatering and stormwater from the sites and will release environmental flows from the dam as the water authority requires.

  • Continuous emissions monitoring on both gas turbines
  • Water treatment and discharge sampling each shift
  • Bunding and spill kits at every chemical store
  • Environmental flow releases logged daily
  • Bird and bat monitoring at the wind farm

5.Reporting

Environmental incidents will be recorded in the HSE Incident Register and investigated. Monitoring results will be reported monthly to the executive and annually to the regulator.

6.Review

This policy will be reviewed annually and whenever the licence or the law changes.
